Catching up with the Cadence

39th and Broadway

Greetings,

I am happy to announce a return to regular scheduling this week! In the wake of recent events, I am enthused to announce the premiere of our newest show! Read all about it below. Even in the face of adversity, the show must go on.

On that note, I’d like to remind you all that the Cadence is always on the lookout for donations. At this time in particular, a considerable donation would be particularly appreciated. This theater has been running for almost a century, and its consistent ability to flourish through the good times and the bad has primarily been thanks to the theater-going community. If you or someone you know would like to continue the proud tradition of supporting the arts, please contact the box office to organize a contribution.

Thank you, as always, for your support.

- Julia Adler, Owner & Managing Director of the Cadence Theatre

Here’s what you have to look forward to next week...

Finally, it’s time for the long-anticipated premiere of the Cadence’s newest show, "Your City," a bittersweet meditation on the beauty, complexity, and fragility of human life. Although our online calendar has yet to be updated, "Your City" will be playing Tuesday through Sunday at 8 p.m. with doors opening promptly at 7 p.m.

Unfortunately, due to a series of recent business transactions, it is unclear how long this show will run. With this in mind, please be sure to drop by the box office as soon as possible to pick up tickets!

Cadence History

On this day in 1995, the Cadence made headlines as the first and only Broadway-adjacent theater to stage a show entirely underwater. The show in question, an aquatic tragedy performed by scuba divers trained in the art of pantomime, was titled “Red Skies at Morning.” The show closed after only one week, when a frankly foreseeable flood cost the theater almost $1 million in water damage.

Staff Spotlight:
Daniel Phan

Technical director Daniel Phan lives in Brooklyn Heights with his wife, their three children, and an energetic Yorkshire terrier named Bubbles. Phan’s been with the Cadence for more than 30 years and has loved almost every minute of it.

Favorite Color: Black

Favorite Show at the Cadence: "It certainly wasn’t ‘Red Skies at Morning,’ I can tell you that much."

One Show She’d Love to Put On: "I’m very interested in reimaginings of Shakespearean tragedies. I’d love to see a production like Hamlet but set on Wall Street in the ‘80s, King Lear in the antebellum South, or Julius Caesar in a well-to-do suburban PTA. Hopefully the Cadence will be able to do one of those someday."

Cocktail of the week

The Ghost Light

4 ounces club soda
1 ounce simple syrup
2 ounces strawberry moonshine
1 strawberry
Ice

In a single rocks glass, stir together the moonshine and simple syrup. Add crushed ice and top with club soda. Stir lightly to combine. Garnish with the strawberry.

For an alcohol-free version, substitute moonshine for strawberry or lemon juice.
